If you are desperate and looking for a JOB, this is the right way to go about finding one.
1. Find as many low skill jobs in the newspaper, on the internet, and at the college job board as
you possibly can.
2. Make as many copies of your resume as you will possibly need to send to each of these
particular companies.
3. Be available to work nights, weekend and holidays.
4. Quit drugs (at least until the drug test is in).
5. Smile at whatever interview might come about.
If you are looking only for a JOB (“Just Over Broke”), following this advice will most likely get you hired by a fast food establishment or a stocking job in a warehouse. It’s not that these positions have no value or potential for excellence – they certainly do. You can see this every time you enter a grocery store and see the difference between a bored clerk chewing gum in your face and moving like a sloth, versus the efficient middle-aged lady with the warm smile who makes you want to buy her a donut. People like that are hard to find, and if you could, you’d get that second woman promoted just for taking care of your needs like a real customer.
So many people getting these JOBS use these tactics, and are miserable two weeks later. Most people who take on these positions rarely have a strategic job search plan that allows them to find work where they will be satisfied, and feel that their days are purposeful. It’s not that the tactics don’t work – it’s that they only work on what they’re designed to accomplish.
Taking care of the necessities of life is a must – a duty for every responsible adult – but it is not all of life. The only thing that this system is designed to do is place you in a JOB that pays your bills, not provide meaningful work that challenges your skill and utilizes your talents. Without creating a plan to get to the work for which you are intended – the work that calls to you past 5 p.m. – people end up miserable, bitter, and burnt out. (I know this from personal experience).
Sure, you can fill out applications and mindless resumes for a while until the immediate needs are met , but don’t stop there like most people do. That cycle ends up in misery and bitterness. Begin building a strategic job search, as you do the work you must, so that later you can do the work you want. (What do I mean by strategic job search?)
A strategic job search is one where you develop an understanding of what your personality is, what your skills and abilities are, what your dreams and values and passions are, and where your life experience has brought you. When you have an understanding of who you are and what you truly desire to accomplish in this life, you are just steps away from taking action into the adventure for which you were created.
Remember, getting to know yourself may take some hard work if you have not spent real time focused on this task. But the results are beyond value. Start with this question – “Who has God designed me to be?” Yes, you were created for purpose and meaning. Your personality is special, your skills and abilities are gifts to use for others, your dreams and passions are worthy of action. Your experiences were lived (maybe survived) through so that you could communicate answers and hope for those who need answers and hope. Put all these together, and you are “uniquely you”. Believe it or not, no one else in the history of the world is exactly like you. If this is true, how can we settle for just a pay check via a JOB? Get on the path toward discovering your calling. It truly is worth the time and effort.
